10 Oct Grow Your Own Bent Arrow Garlic

Learn about why we grow garlic and how you can grow your own too with Bent Arrow's garlic as seed.

It’s a little known fact, but Bent Arrow Acres started all thanks to garlic.

If you know anything about the farm and our journey, this might be surprising. Today, we raise pork and chicken in pasture sharing much of our passion for the animals and sustainability along the way.

But in the early days, it was garlic that gave us the push to create the farm and make it a legitimate business.

We cook together almost every night and have been since we were just dating in our small, city apartments  in our early twenties. It felt like every meal we prepped started with a clove or two of garlic. So, as we fell down the rabbit hole of “local” and “organic” we found ourselves shocked about many things, but the way garlic is grown hit a nerve.

We love garlic.

It’s flavor. It’s scent. It’s look.

Slicing or mincing it was soothing to us.

As we grew more comfortable with recipes and we knew that with fresh garlic at the base of things- even if we were just making a recipe up- would be good. We determined that if a recipe called for just one clove, it was wrong, and we would add at least three.  And, we agreed that jarred garlic was a sin.

So, after learning about it’s sometimes just plain old gross growing conditions and the fact that it’s shipped halfway across the world, we decided to grow our own.  And, because the taste of our homegrown was so good, we wanted to share it with others and Bent Arrow Acres was born.

Garlic bulbs are grown from individual cloves, so grab a few bulbs from Bent Arrow and give it a try in your cooking or even try growing your own. We grow hardback garlic, which is great for storage and for growing in areas that get colder winter’s like the Midwest. Check out this blog post from my personal blog for our growing process and tips.  Garlic should get in the ground just after the first frost.  We normally plant ours around Halloween.

We can ship bulbs anywhere so don’t feel like you have to be local to get some.  Just send us an email at bentarrowacres@gmail.com.

And, as always, bulbs are also available on MarketWagon.com or at the farm.
