09 Jan Hard Boiled Eggs: Many Ways

Check out our favorite ways to keep it fresh with a hard boiled egg breakfast or snack.

Earlier this week we shared a post on social media about how this time of year, protein bars and shakes tend to become a topic of conversation. New year, new habits for healthy living.

We can see the draw to a prepackaged bar or shake. We totally get the idea of something quick and easy to eat on the go. Plus, they are seemingly healthy and packed with around 20ish grams of protein. Sound pretty good.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In the post we made an appeal for hard boiled eggs. We acknowledge that it requires a touch more work. (Seriously, the minimal amount of work… watch our How To Hard Boil an Egg video.) But, a hard boiled, pasture raised egg has 6-8 grams of protein and about 70 calories. If you were to eat 2 or 3 and they are about the same as any protein bar.

We made the push for the one big difference in the fact that these protein bars on the shelves tend to be full of ingredients that are not exactly… real. A hard boiled egg is clean including just one ingredient: The humble egg.

In the comments, you all added more points for the hard boiled egg like less trash (yes! Grab eggs at the farm and skip the carton all together too, if you would like.), less hidden sodium and no sugar, and that these protein bars are expensive. Over two bucks a pop. Three farm eggs are about a buck and change.

So, to celebrate the wonderful hard boiled egg, here are a few ways to pop them for breakfast or a quick snack without getting bored:

Spice It Up

We like S&P. It’s obvious. Make it even more fun by trying it with some flakey salt like Maldon. Another favorite is the ever popular Everything But the Bagel Seasoning (found at Kroger and Trader Joes). This is great on anything, but especially on eggs. Garlic powder gives an egg a punch, Chili Powder gives is spice, and Paprika will make it a little smokey.

Get Saucy

A quick squirt of mustard– yellow, dijon or even grainy- will have you thinking of deviled eggs without all the fuss. Channel your favorite diner and bring some heat with Hot Sauce like Tabasco, Chalula or Sriracha. And, for an fun, interesting change of pace, slab on a little pesto.

Dip It

Hummus isn’t just for carrots and skip the tortilla with your gauc.

Pack with Protein

To really amp it up, wrap an egg deli meat or prosciutto or even some cheese. (We like to make “adult lunchables” this way… Yes. Adult Lunchables. You are welcome.)

Go Crazy

Add crunch with crumpled potato chips. Smash the chips and then dunk the egg so the crumbs coat the outside. Might we suggest sour cream and cheddar chips. So good!
